Miles Biggs is a semi-professional film maker, now retired and resident in Aldeburgh, who specialises in matching scenes from nature and the environment to classical music. This film is a setting of Benjamin Britten’s Four Sea Interludes and Passacaglia from the opera Peter Grimes (1945), edited to a recording by André Previn and the London Symphony Orchestra.
The presentation draws upon the ever-varying moods and shapes of the North Sea in Aldeburgh, and the human activities that take place against its backdrop in the “borough” and also at Snape Maltings. In the Passacaglia the tempo become more reflective, concluding in a solemn moment in Aldeburgh churchyard.
Whilst filming Passacaglia, Miles had in mind Peter Grimes’ turbulent emotions - from foreboding, doom and despondency to anger and defiance. After this his thoughts turned to the deaths of both Peter Grimes and Benjamin Britten.
The film will be presented on a loop in the foyer of the Red House Archive. It lasts 25 minutes, and seating will be provided for visitors who wish to watch it right through. Further background information will be available on the day, and the maker will be in attendance during the morning session.
