Advanced Young Musicians: Student Stories
Advanced Young Musicians (AYM) nurtures talented young musicians by providing a supportive, creative environment where curiosity and individuality are valued. Through collaboration, mentorship, and hands-on music-making, we help each student develop their skills, confidence, and artistic voice – supporting them to progress, whether that means pursuing further study, a career in music, or simply a lifelong connection with creativity.
From potential to conservatoireÂ
James joined AYM in 2018 on a full bursary during an incredibly difficult time in his life. With support from the programme – including funded 1:1 lessons – he was able to continue developing as a musician. James is now studying piano at the Royal Northern College of Music and is pursuing a career he once didn’t think possible.Â
Finding direction and belonging
Ryan arrived at AYM in 2023 with a passion for jazz but limited access to opportunities. Through AYM, he found a community of like-minded young musicians and the confidence to see music as a future. He is now studying Jazz at Guildhall School of Music & Drama.
Reigniting a love of musicÂ
Simon joined AYM in 2023 feeling stuck in his musical journey. As a dyslexic learner, traditional pathways had become a barrier. AYM’s creative and flexible approach helped him reconnect with his love of music – and he has since been offered a place to study at Cambridge University.Â
Discovering a new musical pathÂ
Charlotte joined AYM in 2020 with limited opportunities to collaborate beyond her home environment. When she began to lose connection with her primary instrument, AYM supported her to explore something new. She discovered her voice as a jazz bassist and is now studying at Trinity Laban Conservatoire.Â
Talent recognised and nurturedÂ
Paul joined AYM in 2024 after arriving in the UK as a refugee. His exceptional musicality stood out immediately. With AYM’s support, he is now studying for his A-Levels at The Purcell School, opening the door to a full-time music education.
