
Advanced Young Musicians: Auditions and How to Apply
Who can apply?
AYM is open to young musicians in Year 10 and above, based in Suffolk and East Anglia, who are passionate about music and keen to develop their skills. We are looking for individuals who are eager to explore ideas in practice, contribute creatively, and collaborate with others in a supportive yet ambitious environment.
There is no requirement to have taken graded exams, although applicants are typically working at around Grade 7 standard or higher. Entry is by audition, where we look for musical potential, curiosity and commitment alongside technical ability.
Auditions
- Welcome and Orientation – introduction to the team and the day
- Private Practice – time to warm up and prepare with an accompanist (if required)
- Audition – perform your two prepared contrasting pieces and interview with the panel
- 1-on-1 Talk – short conversation about your music and interests
- Break/Site Tour – time to relax and look around
- Group Task – collaborative, creative music-making session

How you’re assessed
You’ll be observed across three areas:
- Performance – musicality, technique, and communication
- Musicianship – listening, creativity, and collaboration (in the group task)
- Interview – your curiosity, motivation, and openness to learning
